Is BioBor the solution?

Hey there, So I've got an '84 300D Turbo, it sat for a bit (couple of weeks) with a half-full tank of B99, which then gelled in the cold Seattle weather, so I added some Diesel to it. Now it's got tons of black stuff in the pre-filter. I'm told this could be from condensation. I've literally been changing the quickly filling filter out every couple of times I drive it, to be safe. I'm not driving far, and it gets pretty black in those couple of trips. Sigh. So.... I read a few other things & places, and it seems this is an algae (fungus?) problem. I also read I should get various Biocides, and ended up with BioBor. I haven't added it to the tank yet, and have a couple of questions. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it. There is about a 1/4 tank in there now, should I: A) add the BioBor to that (in the correct "shock" amount)? B) fill the tank, then add BioBor? C) Drain the tank, then fill it with clean fuel and BioBor treatment? Help? thanks, Steve.

Hi Steve, BioBor may help if your problems are not too bad and you have a lot of patience :-). Even if draining the tank, expect to keep changing filters for a while. In bad cases I have had to remove the fuel tank and take it to a radiator shop to get it boiled out. In a couple really severe cases I have ended up just replacing the fuel tank with another clean used one. As you have learned bio-diesel is the ultimate diesel fuel tank scrubber....

I recommend you drain what is currently in your tank by removing the fuel tank screen. See our special socket for this CLICK HERE. You may even want to have a spare tank screen on hand. Fill half full with clean fuel - add the BioBor - then drive until tank is down to about 1/8 and then remove tank screen again to drain.

This would also be a good time to upgrade to BIODIESEL GRADE HOSE at the tank if you have not done so already.

Kent, Thanks for the quick reply -- what would I use instead of BioBor? Or is the other solution the boiling out? Do I need to replace the tank screen or can that be cleaned? Thanks again. steve. ps I have upgraded the hoses, and even through 5k miles of biodiesel never really had bad filter problems. Weird. Maybe that's what this is, not a fungus? It's like a coffee-ground looking black stuff that fills the filter now.

Inspect the tank first

Steve, boil it out is the OTHER OPTION. You can clean the screen if not damaged or coked. Which is faster depends on how much algae is in your tank. You can inspect but removing the first aid box and removing the fule tank sending unit. (Also takes our special socket - same size). Use a good light and small inspection mirror to see what's in there. Look at the sides for caked on goo. The condition of the tank outlet screen will also give you an idea how bad it it. Kent

Will the socket fit?

Hi Kent, great advice -- just want to be sure on something-- the description of the socket says it fits "all 201 chassis 1984 to 1993 and all 124 and 126 chassis from 1986." Will it work on an '84 300D Turbo? Thank you so much. steve. Oh, and what would I clean that screen with?
