I just can’t seem to resist rescuing unique and special-interest older Mercedes. Many have been “milestone” models representing the first year of a new chassis or the introduction of some major new component. Well, look what I just drug home or should I say drove home stalling and backfiring all the way. It is a European 1980 W126 280SE. I have always had a special liking for the Euro models. They have been some of the best and most reliable Mercedes I have owned. Now I have a 1980 W116 and a 1980 W126! How could that be? Most new chassis were introduced in Europe one year before being introduced into the U.S. market. This W126 has cloth interior, ABS brakes, oxygen sensor, manual seats and climate control…. and get this… power windows in the front and hand crank windows in the back. Its name is Fritz. The daughter of the previous (2nd) owner named it that because she felt it was always on the “fritz.” :-)
This new arrival will give me an opportunity to do a video series outlining the pros and cons of owning a Euro Benz. Yes, there are some cons as you will soon learn. The first videos should be available on Youtube within the next couple of weeks.
