I decided to name my 1983 380SL “Cherry” because it really is a cherry car and the more I work on it the more cherry things I find out about it. Besides I really like the color :-) Some of you familiar with the R107 may be wondering what I am going to do about the single row timing chain. I will address that in a soon to be released video around the first of March.
If you have not been following the series I am doing on its “rolling restoration, “ here is the link to the full playlist. https://www.youtube.com/
Work on the car is progressing rapidly. While on the lift this past week, I have already come up with two new tools. One is specific to the problem of trying to remove the fuel tank screen on all R107 and C107. Our special screen socket will not work so I had to come up with a solution. Kaia has been bugging me for years to some up with something that will help 107 owners. Look what we came up with.

And while putting on Cherry’s new exhaust, I found a couple of the rubber hangers were almost impossible to stretch far enough to install. So I asked Gerson to come up with a tool that could install the most difficult rubber “donut” with ease. Wait until you see this is action. Here is the link to the video I did and posted on February 23rd. Hurray for Gerson!!!
The restoration on Cherry will continue over the next few months and I am sure we will come up with some more special tools and kits just for that chassis.
BLOWN TURBO DIESEL ENGINES: I have been doing a video series on OM617 engine that have met untimely deaths. If you watch these videos you would think this is happening all the time. It is NOT if you take care of your engine. The one common denominator that I am seeing is excessive heat caused by one or more of the following:
- Poor coolant maintenance
- Engine oil condition or starvation
- Over fueling by tautly fuel injectors.
Think about these three and you might get some ideas on how to better take care of your own diesel. Here is the link to the playlist on blown diesels:
