I Love Air Suspension,

My very first Mercedes was a 1967 300SE coupe with air suspension. A friend of mine needed some money to buy an airplane so he convinced me to buy his Benz. I had no idea what I was buying. He told me it was a valuable model. I figured that would “help him out,” and so started my love affair with Mercedes Benz. That was 25 years ago.

I had had a number of performance cars over the years. Most were sports cars or hot rods. But nothing I had driven came close to the feel of the air suspension ride and handling on that old W112 coupe. Now 25 years later I still love air suspension. Take a look at the latest addition to my fleet. It is a 1972 300SEL 4.5. This W109 one of my favorite chassis and of course it has air suspension.

So that brings my total of air suspension cars up to four. Two have the older mechanical air suspension and two have the modern Airmatic suspension. I know what some of you are thinking.  “Hey, those cars are just trouble.” I have to agree if they are neglected, improperly diagnosed and repaired, and especially if you hire a shop to do the repairs. Sometimes performance does not come cheap. For instance, would I rather fly a Cessna 172 or a Beech Bonanza??

My W220 S500 is a joy to drive. I recently replaced the level control valve and not only did in solve an intermittent and slow air leak but it also improved handling on rough roads and during heavy cornering. I am working on a log cabin project up near Mt. Baker and you want to guess which car I like driving up there. That’s right!  It is a dangerous road and the added bonus is the amazing control you have with the car during heaving braking and swerving at the same time.

I have done a three part on-demand video series on the Airmatic Suspension. You do not need to be afraid of these cars. If you can repair the system yourself ( and it is not rocket science) you can typically save $2000 to $5000 on the average repair.  No, I am not kidding you! If you have been curious about Airmatic Suspension I welcome you to watch this video series. Regular price for the three-part training series is $32.99. It will be on sale on through the end of September to our newsletter subscribers for $9.99. CLICK HERE to learn more -  https://mercedessource.com/store/how-repair-your-airmatic-suspension-demand-video-training-series
