We are seeing this a lot lately. Almost every week we see another part go out of production for these older Mercedes Benz.
What do we do when this happens? For me, it’s an opportunity to go to work in the shop and try to provide a solution for all of you trying to keep these old Mercedes going.
A good example is the Bowden cable. This cable attaches to the transmission and provides a critical means for adjusting the shift pattern on the automatics. The problem is the plastic adjuster is aging deteriorating and breaking and there is no solution. These cables are no longer made. Without the ability to adjust the length you will never get your automatic transmission to shift properly.
Take a look at this picture. You can see the plastic threads are obviously deteriorating and this will soon break. So I am hard at work coming up with a way to fix this problem. Have any of you out there found a good way to solve this problem? I should have a solution worked up within a couple weeks if I can source the right materials. I’m going to need to replace this threaded part.
In my spare time I am currently working on another project. Any of you who have done extensive electrical wiring will understand what a challenge this is. It can also be quite creative. :-)
