BUSTED:

Have you ever driven hours to go look at an old car only to get there and find out it was not as “expected.” That happened to Kaia and me yesterday as we got up early and headed out on a 3-hour drive to purchase a 1978 450SL. Recently we have been “hunting” for an R107 chassis for use in doing some new videos and repair kits for the M116 and M117 V8 engines. From the add, this one seemed like the perfect candidate. Straight body, good paint, no rust, recently rebuilt engine ($5000 in receipts), BUT it would not go into reverse and the seats needed recovering. The seller had been told he needed a new transmission and was ready to sell it “cheap.” When we got there all looked good for an easy restoration, but upon closer inspection, we found something we could not live with and ended up driving home empty handed. It is a long story, so I have decided not to include it all in this email. DON’T LET YOUR OWN V8 GET BUSTED:

The seller did say he started to hear noises in the engine before the chain broke. If he had read my manual on “Preventing Catastrophic V8 Engine Failure,” and had taken action, he would have saved thousands of $$$ and a lot of pain. If you own or plan to own an older V8 Mercedes, then reading this manual you save you big time. The manual covers inspection as well as step-by-step procedures on replacing the oil tube clips, removing and installing new upper chain guides, and replacing the timing chain without taking the engine apart. As a bonus, the manual also covers valve adjustment on the 1969 to 1976 early 3.5 and 4.5 engines. The manual can be purchased separately but is also including in some of my repair kits.

This V8 manual by itself is currently on sale:

NEW M116 AND M117 KITS AVAILABLE AND MORE COMING SOON:

We want to help save these older V8 models so Kent has been hard at work this past month doing a new series of kits and repair videos on these engines. Since they were produced from 1969 to 1991, there are still a lot of them out there. Some are in very nice “sleeper” models. Of course, we all know the R107’s are becoming more popular and are going up in value. If you have ever wanted one of these SL convertibles, now is the time to purchase one. We can help you fix and maintain it yourself!  REMEMBER: If you do get one, immediately pull both valve covers for the inspection I outline in my manual and videos. If the seller of that red 450SL would have done that he would have saved himself $5000! See all my current M116 and M117 V8 kits, videos, and manuals. Much more coming soon.
