You have heard the say “what goes around comes around.” Last week I picked up and drove home a 1982 240D. Let me explain why that is significant.
Flashback to 1994. A pilot friend of mine found an old airplane that we wanted to buy and needed some extra cash so he offered to sell me his W123 240D for a “deal.” I really did not want to buy the car but the price was right so I thought I would go ahead and “help him out.” Little did I realize that one decision would totally change the course of my life over the next 20 plus years. I clearly remember the first time I drove the car. I was not impressed with its acceleration, but once I got up to speed on a windy country road I was really impressed with the ride and handling. The W123 240D will always have a special place in my heart. :-)
I want to have a little fun with what might be the last W123 240D I will own. Over the next 30 to 60 days I will be fixing problems and replacing worn parts to prep the Benz for a cross-country 3000-mile road trip. I will be filming videos on everything I do or fix on this Mercedes. Even though it is in remarkably rust free condition, that does not mean it is in mint condition. It has a very good engine and transmission but there are lots of “little things” that need taking care of. When I drove this 240D home I noticed the heater blower was not working and a couple of the power windows did not move at all. I thought to myself, “that is going to be more money and more time to fix it!” But then I thought back to the very first kit we sold on the internet pack in 1999. Another significant milestone… :-).
