Fuel Filter Replacemnent and other Difficulties- Be Prepared!

When my '82 300DT lost power on the freeway I managed to nurse it to my destination and got out my fuel spare filters. I installed a new prefilter and main filter, bypassed the FM10 water separator, pumped on the hand pump, and then found that the lack of a 17mm end wrench made bleeding the lines at the injectors real difficult as all I had was an adjustable wrench. Too bulky for that job. Then I screwed up by not reading Kent's instructions carefully and ran my battery down before the fuel lines were bled enough to get the engine going. A friend jumped my battery but it still took a lot of cranking to get her running again. Then I tried to turn the engine off and it kept on running! Also, a lot of electrical things wouldn't work anymore like the turn signals, brake lights and windows. The fuses all looked fine. What was going on? After driving home without stop lights and turn signals (yikes! - but loads of power with new filters) I got out my technical materials and found that the vacuum fuel shutoff valve on the injector pump, operated through a control valve in the ignition switch, had chosen that moment to glitch up for some reason and I had been driving the car all that way with the key in the engine-off position! No wonder all the electrical stuff hadn't worked. The glitch has now disppeared. Note to self: Carry more wrenches, tech information, hand vacuum pump, and jumper cables. Also a better light to work by. Dave
