 Many enthusiasts are now buying these 2004 to mid-2010 high-performance Mercedes with little thought to the transmission. When the transmission goes into "limp-home mode," you may freak out - not know what to do - and if you take it to the dealer, it can be VERY expensive, and you will never know how well the repair was done. In August of 2023, Kent set out to remove some of the mysteries surrounding this very common 7-speed transmission and to come up with information and solutions so the DIY owner could fix it himself. This is a transmission pan and filter upgrade. It will increase the flow rate through your transmission. Why Upgrade?

This filter is a HUGE improvement over the original filter installed in the early first-generation transmissions. However, you have to install the deeper pan in order to install this TRIPLE filter. The newer style green fill pipe MUST be used when making this upgrade. If you use your old white pipe (which is taller than the green pipe). You will end up significantly overfilling your transmission after changing to this pan and filter.  Always replace the pan bolts because they are aluminum and designed to stretch. Once used, you risk breaking them!

We even include a new set of magnets to be installed in the rear of the pan.

Once you install this, you must refill the transmission with the correct RED fluld. REMEMBER: You can upgrade the pan and filter but NOT the fluid. Kent recommends a full power drain of the fluid before refilling. This can be done with his pressure fill and drain kit, which can be purchased separately below. Installing this deeper pan, Mercedes triple filter, and draining ALL the fluid is the absolute best way to prolong the life of your early 2003 to 2010 7-speed transmission.

Infrared Thermometer to Use When Checking Fluid Level in a 722.9 transmission

On the 7-speed transmissions from 2003 to 2016 transmission fluid level has be checked from under the car, with the engine running and the correct temperature reached.

Since there are no dipsticks on these transmissions, the DIY way to check fluid level is from under the car with a touch-free thermometer to measure the heat of the transmission fluid BEFORE setting the correct level. Instructions are included with my full 722.9 transmission fill kit.
