Diesel Engine Specific Aid

My '81 240D stalled, and now won't restart..

Okay..

I rolled my '81 240D off the ramps, after changing the rear
diff fluid (boy-- I bet THAT stuff was there since the Reagan
Administration!)..

It stalled when it came off the ramps, and refuses to restart..

IN THE LAST WEEK-- I replaced the passenger rear window (as some
vandal put a rock thru it!). Also last week, I changed the
transmission fluid (including draining the TC) and put up a new filter..

I also put up a new starter-- because the old one wasn't always
engaging.. (New one works fine, and I had it bench tested BEFORE I put it up)

Anyway--

The car has historically HAD a vac leak-- to shut it off, you turned
the key, and locked the driver's door, and it would stumble out.. The

Purpose of diesel hand primer pump?

On my '78 300cd there is a hand primer pump on the fuel line just upstream of the main fuel filter. Does this pump run continuously while the car is on to draw diesel from the tank? Or is it just there to act as an emergency hand pump if you run out of fuel? I am trying to determine the appropriate place to cut in my svo line.

Crank shaft pulleys fell off!

Mayday mayday!!!!!My crank shaft pulley sheared the bolts that held it (the pulley itself) to the crankshaft! There is a large bolt that appears to hold the flange that the balancer and pulley is fastened to. Is this correct? If so can I remove the large bolt to remove the flange to make the repair easier? Sincerely arcnspark

Better starter for 123 240D

Kent mentioned in one of his guides, that an old 240D engine that has trouble starting in the morning might benefit from being equipped with the turbodiesel starter. I have inquired with my repair shop and two parts suppliers, and they all maintain that the starter for a 240D and a 300 Turbodiesel are one and the same. Makes me wonder . . . has the aftermarket already upgraded to the "better" starter or downgraded to the "cheaper" one? Hence, I'd love to get some info, maybe a parts number for that one . . . Thanks, Bernard

76 300D no power to preglow system, #4 fuse blows

I don't know if this new problem I've found has a direct link to the ongoing problems of the car not starting under any circumstances, but this morning I noticed that everytime I turn the key to position 2, fuse #4 (8 amp) in my main fuse box blows. It supposedly is linked to horn, emission control, carburetor heater (n/a), delay switch, and turn signal lamp. Also, when I hit the hazard lights, fuse # 1 blows. It goes to the warning buzzer, auto. antenna, trunk lamp, reading lamp, clock, rooflamp, hazard warning lights(l/r)and the fuel supply shut off valve.

300td valve adjustment

I bought a 300td about 2 years ago and after 35000 miles i decided to check the valves. They were about.010in and .012in. the car was starting rough or not at all if it was cold (20F-30F). I already tightened up the vacuum system and ran two diesel purges which seemed to help for a day or two. from a previous 300 diesel i owned ,that had similiar symptoms, i noticed the car started better with about .012 and .015 clearances. I adjusted to this clearance and it helped a little. i know these settings are looser than called for but it seems to help. Is there risk to the engine at these clearances?

1981 300D: grinding noise near alternator/water pump...

I have a 1981 300D. A few weeks ago the charge indicator light came on, so I replaced the voltage regulator (thanks for the plastic tie), and the light went off. Two weeks later I was driving with the windows down, and heard an unfamiliar metallic noise coming from the engine. The sound is coming from the front - near the alternator and water pump area. Per your advice I poured water over the belts and...the noise stopped. I sighed in relief, until I noticed that the belt had slipped on the alternator, which had stopped spinning.
