Diesel Automatic Transmission fluid level?

We own a 1983 300td. The automatic transmission level is low. Is it checked in Park or Neutral? What kind of fluid does it require? How warm does the fluid need to be to get an accurate reading?....Thanks arcnspark

Check fluid level in automatics

The fluid level should be checked with the engine and transmission hot, the engine running and transmission in park. That means you should drive the car before checking. From my experience if you read it in park with a cold engine it will read about 1/8 inch low on the dip stick. Your 83 300TD requires Dexron III type fluid. This you can find anywhere. Brand is not critical. Be sure to use a lint free and clean cloth when wiping the dip stick. It is critical you do not introduce any lint or dirt into the transmission.
