The best way to avoid problems in the future is to fully service your sunroof (clean and lubricate) and then reapply the proper lubricant on a regular 6 month basis. The problems always start with a slow moving roof. That  most often means it is suffering from a lack of lubrication either in the tracks or the cable housing. That puts added stress on the motor, gears and slides and if not dealt with will lead to expensive failure of those parts as well.

Kent's manual will explain how to remove the roof, troubleshoot the problems, properly lubricate the parts, reinstall it and adjust it properly.
