Diesel Fuel Mileage Expectations
What range of mileage do the 300TD wagons get. I just bought one a few weeks ago and the first tank was a little over 22mpg. Improvement ideas?? I'd like to really maximize fuel economy.

Biodiesel engine noise, sluggish?
After installing a screen in my tank (it was missing and a large outlet pipe installed) my engine seemed noisier. Is this injecter pump noise? Now the car is loosing power after two days on biodiesel. The prefilter looks clean. Is my main filter clogging up already?

How to Start 300D 1981 (Newbie needs help!)
Just picked up a 1981 300D with 110,000 miles original engine (I hope). At the resellers lot, they had no problem (naturally) starting it many times for me--and I started it also and drove it home--about 35 miles. Had it garaged for about 1 week now and when I went to start it today, I am struggling. The temp. here today is about 50F--cooler by at least 15 degrees than when I purchased it. I am wondering if that is causing me problems. First off though, I am entirely new to starting a diesel, so my initial question has to do with 'how to start' the vehicle properly.

240D speedometer howl
I have a 1981 240D with a speedometer that has recently begun to howl loudly. The speedometer works fine for awhile and then makes a clicking noise and begins to howl. It continues to indicate speed while howling. When I slow down almost to a complete stop, it seems to reset itself and the howling goes away for awhile. I'm thinking maybe the end of the shaft is worn and slightly rounded? Anyone run into this? I think my speedometer is ok since I just had it rebuilt a few months ago.

Gas engine MBZ oil change recommendation
I know that the oil is supposed to be changed every 3k miles on an MBZ diesel. I'm wondering if there is a time deadline as well like on a gas car -- say after 3 months even if the car hasn't been driven much? Thanks, B

240D Power Antenna Repair
I have a 83 240D Sedan. The power antenna will not go down all the way when I turn off the radio. It tries but gives up after a few seconds. It basically goes from half up to full up but never all the way down. I was wondering how much work it is to remove and/or fix. Or is it something that is not too much $$ to just replace? I'm kind of a mechanical geek and I like all things to work properly just for the joy of it.

I have a 1981 300TD that had a 4 speed swap done to it. The slave cylinders are VIN specific. I have, what I believe is, a slave cylinder issue and am trying to figure out if I have an early or late 240D tranny. Any clever ideas out there? Thank you!

Question about testing for engine blow-by
MY HUSBAND AND I BOUGHT SEVERAL OF YOUR BOOKLETS. WE USED YOUR BOOKLET TITLED "Diesel Performance Tuning and Repair" RECENTLY TO TEST A 79 240D AND IT FAILED VIRTUALLY ALL OF YOUR TESTS LISTED UNDER "Quick Inspection Checklist." THANKS VERY MUCH YOU SAVED US LOTS OF MONEY BY HELPING US JUDGE THE WORTHINESS OF THIS POTENTIAL PURCHASE. ANYHOW, MY HUSBAND DID THE TEST WHERE YOU UNSCREW THE CAP ON THE VALVE COVER AND SEE IF IT DANCES AROUND, OR IF SMOKE BLOWS BY, ON OUR GAS CAR. I'M WONDERING IF IT'S A GOOD TEST FOR GAS CARS AS WELL AS DIESELS? THANKS, B

Where the hood hinge goes through the body.....
of my 300TD, the hole has been elongated to the point that the clip pops off the hinge arm when I open the hood. Right now, I have the hinge arm through the hole with a big washer and then the clip. The washer keeps things in place enough to keep the clip on and it works. Certainly not a long term fix.
Has anyone dreamed up a solid fix for this one? I thought about JB Welding the washer into place, and then I thought again....Any suggestions, sarcastic or otherwise, are welcome. Thanks!
