Fixing up 78 240D - where do I start?

Hey everyone, So this is my story and I'll try to keep it as brief as possible. I recently bought a 78 240d though an auction on ebay, pretty much sight unseen. This is my first mercedes, let alone a diesel. The car is pretty solid for what I gave for it, hardly any real serious rust, body is actully real straight, and besides a couple of small items everything seems to work.

DIY Fuel Injector replacement questions

Hi- first posting here ;) How risky is it to install new fuel injectors yourself? I just got the DIY fuel injector kit from this web site (that I trust) and was going to try and install it myself. Before I did, I asked my mechanic, whom I trust, how much it would cost for HIM to install them. Before we even go to the price he informed me that when you replace the injectors, you sometimes have to resand or buff the inner faces of the fuel injector housing thingy (forget what is is exactly - but those things you disassemble and have spring in them to hold the actual little injectors.)

72 220d stc

i have a 72 220d want to put stc, your ready to install stc is mostly for 123,you state 115 chassis is difficult because of battery.can one put filter-vfm on passenger side of engine bay and route longer hose to ip pump etc with insulation on hose.is that the major stumbling block? do you recommend specific insulation on hose? also does veg oil remaining in engine at shutdown cause coking with cold start in the morning?

1981 300D: Valve adjustment = shifting problems

Short story - a rushed valve adjust on a 1981 300D. While moving vacuum box attached to top of valve cover, ALL five vacuum lines became dislodged. And no, I didn't jot down a diagram or take a photo first. So, I put the lines back in as best I could remember, but now the inevitable shifting problems have appeared. Seems fine on level, but not so hot on hills (revs as if slipping intermittently, doesn't shift or downshift correctly some times). All was just fine before the valve adjust. And I can't find any other dislodged lines or cracked lines/connectors. I know little of this, but it seems the positioning of the five vacuum lines leading to the rubber block attached to the valve cover box is critical.

OM636 circa '85 top end service

Hi guys, I don't plan to take this forum off on a marine tangent but I have just bought a small 1985 motor sailer powered by a marinised Mercedes OM636 which appears to have had very little professional service, ever. Sticking to the similarity of the engine to all the older four cylinder diesel Mercs I am confident that the Fast Start Glow Plug conversion is an immediate requirement as she is a very slow, and then lumpy, starter. My question then is, what special tools (if any) are required to remove and decarbonise the precombustion chambers? Obviously I will have injectors serviced etc but what other matters should I be looking at whilst picking out the black bits? Which of the manuals you have produced will be the most help to me in getting this engine back up to spec?

A/C compressor, '76 240D [115 chassis]

One thing I've never tried to mess with myself is A/C. The mechanic who recently checked out my non-functional system said the compressor was ruined because a previous owner had converted it from R12 to R134. This didn't surprise me, based on what I've read on these forums, but what did was his categorical remark that replacing it with a used or rebuilt compressor wouldn't do. That struck me as unrealistic and perhaps also just mistaken. Can anyone with experience with used or rebuilt compressors confirm or deny whether these are a viable option on old Mercedes?
