79 300CD - ID the engine?

I have a 79 300cd, I noticed shortly after purchasing it that it has a transmission vaccum valve [that is not hooked up] mounted on the injector pump, I could not locate a modulator on the transmission,I later read that79 models did not use vacuum for transmission control....hmmm I thought that maybe someone had changed the pump with one from a later model.

Spend $25 on purge or $90 on new injector tips?

My '80 240D has 237,000 miles on it. Just had the timing chain replaced and some other work done. Had latest Greasecar kit installed as well. Noted Kent's conversation about his son's 240D chugging up hills. Given the car's age and unknown status of the injector tips and similiar issues going up hill, should I just go ahead and buy new tips in deference to the diesel purge or is there more to the purge than just cleaning the tips? Computer on diesels?? models/yrs?

Hello Diesel Fans, I want to buy an older MB diesel, but I want to avoid cars with computer controls of any kind. I know that in the US, gasoline powered cars with combustion control computers started showing up in 1978 and later. My '96 Ford PSD truck has a computer, but it is a TDI and not mechanically injected. My question is, when did Mercedes start putting computer controls, combustion or other, on their diesels, if ever? Leaky head gaskey on 300TD

The head gasket on my 300TD wagon is leaking and my mechanic said you can drive years with this condition. Being a major investment, how important is this to get done? Is there a reasonable chance of serious damage if it's not fixed soon? The mileage hasn't been so good since we got it, don't know if this repair would help that. I think I'm going to replace to injector tips soon to see if that helps mileage a bit. Thanks for any feedback.

Tachometer question

Good Morning all, 1983 300CD. This is a new purchase and the TACH and Clock are not working. I purchased the "HOW TO" from you concerning the removal and replacement of the dash and related gauges. First, there is 12 volts to the clock so I have to assume the clock itself is bad. I can live without that ; however, the connection going to the tack show 8.3 volts. My question, is that the correct voltage? It does not change with engine RPMs. Additionally, I am unable to find the Amplifier on the L/inner fenderwell. I wanted to check it but I am unable to locate it ANYWHERE.

Heater and Tach problem for a 1982 300 CD TD

I found no repair Manuals and/or Diagnostic Guides to diagnose my AC/Heater and Tach problem. My heater does not come on when I want it to come on. Most of the time, nothing. I would press the buttons on the climate control and hear contacts, I would roll the temp setting wheel and hear contacts in AC as well in heating. I have source parts and like to repair it myself. I am willing to do a rebuilt, if possible. The Tach either jump around or does not work or works normally, mostly jumps around. This bothers me
