560 Engine in 420SEL?

Hey Kent, Are the 420 block and the 560 block about the same size? I found a valve cover thats off a 560 that will fit my 420. Are the block and heads the same, just the stroke is different.I am going to pick and pull tomorrow for the valve cover and safety belts. Should I just grab the engine and use some parts for my 420 or even put the 560 inplace of the 420?

differential removal

Kent, Can you give a short summation on how to remove the differential on my 82 sd? I recently purchased one that howls very loud, and the previous owner supplied one with the car. I do have a car lift, tranny jack, tall jack stands. Just looking at it, I would unbolt it from the body, lower it, drain out lube, take rear cover off, remove axle clips (Pin), remove rear wheels, loosen axle nuts on hub, and go from there. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Bill

instrument needles jumpy

Hi, I have a 1982 300TD. I am experiencing some strange instrument cluster behavior and I'm wondering if someone might chime in on how to fix it. I've removed the cluster a few times to make sure that all connections are sound and as far as I can tell, they are. Quite randomly, the fuel gauge and the temperature gauge start to jump a bit. If I switch the headlights on, the fuel and temperature needles get more jumpy, the buzzer goes on and off and the instrument cluster light turns off. The pressure gauge and others work as expected though I have to use a flashlight to see it. Thanks!

Grinding Brakes

Hello, I just did a complete brake job on my 1979 300SD. Replaced all the rotors, calipers, and brake pads, as well as the master cylinder. It all went fine, except now when I turn, there is a grinding noise that comes from the front wheels, it's like the brakes are grinding, but it only happens when I'm not driving straight. Any Suggestions? Thanks, Jeff

'86 190e wiper switch stuck in on position, radio on, unless turned off manually

This morning I got in the my 190e and the radio was on, started OK, thought battery might be dead. Then turned on wipers, soon after smelled burning rubber, thought it might be coming from a construction site, only to find I could not turn off my wipers at the control stick-they are still on. It will not rotate, high beams work fine on and off, so do turn signals. So I have an electrical problem, I'll remove the cover to access the wiper, turn switch, no doubt, I'll see some major melt down there. Has anyone else had electrical problems with their 190e. I've just been driving this one for a week, I purchased it from a dealer with 97K. Where else should I be looking for problems that perhaps resulted in this issue I have this morning?

450se hydraulic lifters

the left hand bank hydraulic lifters are not working. this happened while the engine was ticking over at 800rpm. the revs dropped off gradually until the engine syopped. all the lifters do not rise even though the oil pressure while cranking the engine is good. i am using the "left hand" term as stated in the manual,it is actually the right hand bank when view from the front of the vehicle. any ideas?

Alternator with new regulator/brushes cuts out at 3500 RPM

My alternator stoped generating (but no charge light while running) so I replaced the regulator/brushes with the kit available here. Now, when I drive around with a volt meter attached to the battery, I see that the battery is being charged until the engine hits about 3700 RPM and doesn't resume charging until the RPM gets below 3400. The cut-in and cut-out RPM remain the same reguardless of what gear the car is in (even Park) or what accessories are on or off (although this does affect the battery voltage a little).
