'82 240D Service/Repair Manuals

I just bought a 1982 240D and am struggling with finding a good repair manual. I don't like the CD-ROM manuals that you can find at manualsunlimited.com b/c I like to have the physical manual in hand when I'm doing a repair. I also find the Chilton's manual to be way to general and not very accurate for my '82 240D. I see that mercedessource has a bunch of manuals for sale, that cover a wide variety of 240D related topics. But I don't see one or even two that combined are a comprehensive engine and body repair guide. Can anyone recommend a good service manual (Mercedes Factory manual in print?) or manuals that would cover most major maintenance and repairs? First up for me right now is glow plugs, valve cover gasket, vacuum pump gasket and brake master cylinder.

my 83 engine is different then my 85

I have an 85 300 CD turbo and the original engine was blown, I got a beautiful 83 engine, have it up and running, but the old engine had a 3 wire lead on the injection pump and a 3 wire lead and switch on top of the valve cover. The 83 engine has a vacuum switch on the valve cover and no electrical lead on the pump. The transmission shifts hard and I assume it is these differences that are causing this can anyone help me with?

thanks,
Phil

84 300SD transmission governor screens

I would like to check and clean the governor screens in my 84 300SD transmission, but have no idea how to go about doing it. I think they can be accessed near the filter, but don't know anything about transmissions. Any suggestions? Are there any books or manuals available to teach me how these transmissions work and how they can be serviced and repaired?

Thanks for your help - Steven

82 240d smoking bad (IMO)

I recently did a valve adjustment, hoping that the minor exhaust smoke would go away. It got worse. The engine smokes on startup, smokes really bad and runs rough until it is warm, then smokes enough to be annoying at idle. It appears to be oil smoke. I tested compression, wet and dry, and that was fine (dry-330, 340,340,335). According to previous owner's meticulous records, the engine was overhauled at 515K, am at 565K now. Any insight would be appreciated!!

1980 300D over charging battery

I have a 1980 300d and my alternater is over charging. Its between 13.5 and 16v. I was told this could be as simple as it not being grounded. I fear it may be the alternater. Being that I am broke...the ground would be the best problem for me. I was wondering if the alternators in these cars had a seperate regulator or if it was built in and if there were any things I could look for before i spend the money on a new alternator.

Thanks guys

1985 300td vac pump caged bearing?

Hello, Kent. I have done a lot of work with your great parts and books. I was rebuilding my vacuum pump and wondered if it wouldn't be a better idea to rebuild a used one that has the trapped bearings on the piston actuator (don't know the actual terminology here). I'm concerned about the old bearings in mine and the possiblity that they could drop into my timing chain. They feel a little growly when I turn them. Do you have any used pumps with this bearing?

85 300SD Aux Fan will not turn on when pressure is high

I have been experiencing a couple of problems with the AC. One was the compressor clutch "cooked itself" resulting in it being replaced. After it was replaced I noticed the aux fan was not ever coming on and the clutch still has moments where it is not completely engaging and is partially engaged resulting in it heating up. I have troubleshot the aux fan down to the resistor used for a slower aux fan speed. It appears to be open and should be replaced. Could the failing of the aux fan cause the slipping of the clutch and how difficult is it to replace the resistor?

Thanks

82 240d intake manifold help

when I pulled the air cleaner to remove linkage for a valve adjustment, I noticed a butterfly flap inside the intake manifold that can be adjusted to open or close. mine stay mostly closed until the thottle was down about 3/4 of the way and then just opened 1/4 of they way at full throttle. when and how far should this open for the best perfomance. my car is really slow but I've been getting it better with lots of tuning but still needs all the help I can get.
