'87 300DT with coolant, oil pressure, and fuel guage malfunction

Hi: I have an '87 300DT with the 124 chassis. Has been running fine. The problem: the gauges for the coolant, oil pressure, and fuel all dropped to zero. The combination relay (part 201 821 00 47) is vibrating and making noise. Replaced the relay with the identical part with no improvement. Fuses are all good. I am about to test the sender units for the above guages. Any ideas? Thanks much, Pat

240 warm up loss of power

My 1982 240 D will loose power shortly after warming up, particularly noticable when attempting to accelerate or go uphill. During these times I can manually downshift the automatic transmission and the engine speed does not respond. Once I crest the hill and reach 45 miles per hour there is a sudden surge in power. I have changed all filters, and two different diesel mechanics in our area cannot figure it out. The car is a wvo conversion, and the same phenomenon occurs wether on diesel or veg. On a cold morning or when the car is first started this does not occur. Any suggestions?

Stripped valve locking nut 1983 300D - Now what???

Hi all; Was doing my first valve adjustment and am convinced that the #6 valve has a stripped lock nut. I'm concerned that the valve stem itself is stripped, but when I tighten down the top (adjusting) nut, the locking nut just glides with it, and I CAN get a ton of clearance for the rocker arm. What's involved in changing the locking nuts? Do you have to remove the cam, etc? I know that either (or both) the threaded valve stem or the nuts can strip. Typically, does the nut give out first? Hoping to hear that I don't need to pull the cylinder head.

Sporadic oil pressure needle

!985 300CTD;150,000miles. During a 7 hr trip at highway speed the oil pressure indicator needle stays at a constant "3". When reducing speed & coming to a stop or idling the needle bounces (is not steady) at just under "2" & a "thumping/knocking" sound comes from the gauge area but is not heard when the engine rev's up. The engine runs quite well & pulls strong. The oil/filter was just changed & I have used synthetic diesel 15w-40 in the vehicle for the past two oil changes@5000 miles per.

Putting gas in a diesel - What happens?

Hi there. Just was curious about what exactly would happen if someone filled a diesel cars tank with normal gasoline. I know this is a bad idea. I'd NEVER do it, of course. Just was wondering what the effect would be. It's bound to have happened by accident at a full service station to someone. Would it start? Run? Explode? Would this make for a fun filled, exciting episode of "Master Blasters"??? Anyway, was just wondering and hoped someone would know. Thanks so much... NSA - Hazleton, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.

83 300TDT non start

I was tyring to track a problem with slow engine shut-off and have solved the problem so completely that the engine is now totally stopped. While running my car with the shut off valve actuator disconnected from vacuum, a gauge on the line that supplies vacuum to that actuator and the ignition shut off to measure vacuum supplied to the actuator, the car slowly built to about -5lbs before the car rattled to a stop. The shut off valve actuator was disconnected from vacuum. The car will now crank but is not getting fuel (apparently). I have verified that there is no fuel at the return line when car cranks, no fuel moving in the prefilter. I have removed and checked the shut off actuator and shut off linkage. They are all moving freely and properly.

300D 617.912 engine will not start

I have a two tank SVO system on my Merc with 310,000 Kms on the clock - 100,000 Kms are mine most on SVO. I have never been stumped, held up or broken down before. The engine starts and shuts down on diesel. The problem- I was away for a week and my Merc sat idle. When I came back the Merc started hesitantly (low battery). I drove about 20 Kms and the next day she would not start for love nor money; totally dead. Not even a kick from one cyllinder. I checked; Lift pump ok, replaced with electric lift pump & still no go. IP moving fuel when lines cracked. Cam timing marks and harmonic balancer marks line up ok. Valve clearance not binding, Glow plugs working, has the Mercedessource fast plugs installed. Best thing ever. The injectors were re-newed 8 months ago,

220d hard starting

I have a '69 220d auto. It has over 330k on the od. I have little history on it but it still runs with some effort. When it's cold I have to pump the gas peddle as I crank over the engine and once it starts I have to keep the revs up for a few minutes until it goes into a rough idle. This car is far from being a nice ride but I got the car basically free. Any ideas on my problem? Thanks Courtland Also, how hard is it to convert to biodiesel and how easy is it to put a bigger diesel engine in it ? The 240d comes to mind. I also have trans. problems but I'll save that for another day.
