84 500 SEL slow engine start-up

My engine cranks for 8 - 10+ seconds before s-l-o-o-w-l-y catching on. Then it sputters for several seconds until I give it some gas to clear it out. I got this car 2 weeks ago and the previous owner said, "do not touch the accelerator pedal until it starts." It seems like it's flooding. This happens when hot,or cold. He also said to change the plugs and it would run well.

Runs fine on highway but seems to eat lots of gas (14 mpg?). 211,680 miles on Od. Original paint and leather in very good condition.

1987 300E Will Not Run

About 2 months ago my wife took the car to exercise class and when she came out to come home and started the car it backfired and would not re-start. I checked it out the following day and though it didn't backfire it would not run for more than 1/2 a second. I had the vehicle towed to my house and have periodically tried to start it with the same result. It will fire, run for about 1/2 a second than shut off. It will continue to do that until I depress the accelerator pedal then it won't start at all.

1988 300TE Intermittant engine stalling, not restarting.

Kent, this car has been plagued with the same problem as long as we have owned it. (about ten years) I have done new points and plugs several times and the car has run better but it still will go through occasional fits of dieing in the road and not restarting. It has remained dead for several days and begun running again weather I have done anything to it or not. It has dropped in its tracks within 24 hrs of a complete tune up and it has gone 20K without a hiccup.

1986 560SEL stalling out on kick-down

I recently bought a 1986 560SEL. The engine was rebuilt (completely) at 212,000. The transmission was serviced at 195,000. It sat dormant for 4.5 years because the original owner had the engine rebuilt ($2,300 worth) and the tranny started acting up. He got digusted and parked it. Took him 4.5 years to decide to sell it I guess. I bought it, found a disconnected vaccum line under the passenger side of the airbox and it ran GREAT for 3 weeks.

The only parts I replaced to get it running (and home) were the high-volume / low-pressure fuel pump and the fuel filter. The old (original pump) had black old-gas sludge in it. I know I need to clean the tank (I was just foolishly hoping to melt it out).

190E 16v Still wont run.

I havea 190 E and 16 valve mercedes.I wrote to you before asking why it only started when i primed it and followed your suggestions.I replaced the Fuel Accmulater,Fuel filter and cheak valve.primed it and starts but will not stay running.as if it was out of gas.The fuel pump is making alot of noise can this be my problem to.Like i said in my first letter will start if i prime it but now it only stays started till prime runs out.ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL HELP .THANK YOU.

1985 500 SEL coolant temperatue

1985 - 500 SEL When starting the engine from cold, the coolant temperature slowly rises until it is up in the red zone, above the 120C marked on the gage. The temperature stays there for several minutes, then drops down to 80C where it will stay. The coolant level is correct and the thermostat has recently been replaced. Is the new thermostat sticking or is this normal behavior? It worries me to see the temperature gage that high.

1990 300 SE trouble starting after driven short distance

My 1990 300SE runs fine normally but lately when I go out and start it it starts fine but if I drive a very short distance or kill it and try to resart it it turns over and sounds like it is mis-firing and won't start. This is happening more and more often but not every time. After I finally get it started it runs fine in park but if I put it in gear it sputters and dies this happens over and over and then eventually I can get it started and go. While it is doing this I can rev the engine up in park and it runs great but as soon as I put it in gear it dies.
