Better ride for 83 380 SL

Hi, My 83 380 SL does not ride well. I replaced the shocks and it seems like it needs a whole lot more as it thumps over rough roads.. What DIY things can I do make my car ride better? I read in this forum that replacing the front subframe bushing is an easy fix and greatly improves ride and steering. Any suggestions?

240D Starter Issues

I've got a 1977 240D with a starter that won't turn (or do much of anything) when the key is turned. It will, however, start right up when I bridge the two screw terminals on the smaller cylinder on the starter assembly (solenoid?). I'm not too clear how exactly the starter motor works, so I'm looking for some help on what to look at/for. More, possibly relevant, info: Drove about 150 miles through 100+ degree heat. When I stopped for lunch, car exhibited above symptoms. Banged on large starter cylinder, car started with minimal fuss. After sitting in a driveway overnight and most of the next day, starter wouldn't turn at all (or even "click"). My friend suggested bridging the two screw terminals on the solenoid with a screw driver, and this started the engine right up.

Suspension creeky-clunking - Track Rod Mount?

Got a 240D '83. Great shape overall - but all (replace-over-repair) mechanics say I need all new suspension parts. I have replaced shocks with new bilsteins. Overall she rides fine thru bumps and dips, better than newer cars of non-German manufacture. Problem: Deep dips yield a creeky-klunk that sounds like it is coming directly from the passenger foot area - just where the track rod mount is anchored on the opposite side. Get this: barely noticable in the summer, it sounds really bad in the colder (non-freezing) weather...does this indicate anything clearly wrong?

300ce engine loses power at highway speeds

Sir: I have a 1988 300CE with 108k miles. Recently, while driving at highway speeds, 60+ mph, the engine seems to lose power and the red "check engine" light blinks on for a few seconds. It feels like I am losing power in one or two cylinders for 5 to 10 seconds. Then, the power resumes, the engine light goes out and everything is OK. This problem will only occur about once in 20 or 30 minutes of highway driving. I took it to my local mechanic, he drove the car and, of course, this problem did not occur. Any suggestions? Thank you, tjw tward@hseinc.biz

No oil filter?!

Hi I'm a new MB owner of a 1974 240D automatic. Like all vehicle I buy I change the filters as soon as possible after purchase. I believe the oil filter canister would be behind the injecter pump on the driver side of the motor, but alas no oil canister. The previous owner told me that he had put in a newer used motor after the first one blew. It runs like a top and doesn't have any problems but can anyone tell me where the filter is located. ! Thank you for your advice and help. Troubled MB owner.
