Jacking Point Problem/Mercedes 300D 1981

Hi--I recently acquired a 1981 300D--upon closer inspection of the underside, I discovered one of the former owners covered up the jacking points with metal (I am guessing to patch for rust). In any event, I am now wondering what options I have for jacking it up seeing as the jacking points are covered. I am working with a floor jack and jack stands--I have worked with trucks before but not a sedan so I am not sure what my options are as how to get around this problem. Any advice on how to go about safely jacking it up would be appreciated, Thanks, Archie

185/R14 size tires

In the past, I've been able to buy 185/R14 Futura Euro Metric tires at Pep Boys. This is the original size for my 1980 300SD (though lower in speed rating). These tires, made by Cooper, are no longer available. If at all possible, I would prefer to stay with this original size because they are skinny, thus helping keep splashed water and road matter under the fenderwells. They are also less sensitive to minor variations in wheel alignment. Any ideas on where I can get my favorite size 185/R14, any brand?

240D speedometer howl

I have a 1981 240D with a speedometer that has recently begun to howl loudly. The speedometer works fine for awhile and then makes a clicking noise and begins to howl. It continues to indicate speed while howling. When I slow down almost to a complete stop, it seems to reset itself and the howling goes away for awhile. I'm thinking maybe the end of the shaft is worn and slightly rounded? Anyone run into this? I think my speedometer is ok since I just had it rebuilt a few months ago. Thanks, Andy

240D Power Antenna Repair

I have a 83 240D Sedan. The power antenna will not go down all the way when I turn off the radio. It tries but gives up after a few seconds. It basically goes from half up to full up but never all the way down. I was wondering how much work it is to remove and/or fix. Or is it something that is not too much $$ to just replace? I'm kind of a mechanical geek and I like all things to work properly just for the joy of it.

Question about testing for engine blow-by

MY HUSBAND AND I BOUGHT SEVERAL OF YOUR BOOKLETS. WE USED YOUR BOOKLET TITLED "Diesel Performance Tuning and Repair" RECENTLY TO TEST A 79 240D AND IT FAILED VIRTUALLY ALL OF YOUR TESTS LISTED UNDER "Quick Inspection Checklist." THANKS VERY MUCH YOU SAVED US LOTS OF MONEY BY HELPING US JUDGE THE WORTHINESS OF THIS POTENTIAL PURCHASE. ANYHOW, MY HUSBAND DID THE TEST WHERE YOU UNSCREW THE CAP ON THE VALVE COVER AND SEE IF IT DANCES AROUND, OR IF SMOKE BLOWS BY, ON OUR GAS CAR. I'M WONDERING IF IT'S A GOOD TEST FOR GAS CARS AS WELL AS DIESELS? THANKS, B
