If both dash lights are not working including the lights in the upper center console the problem is most likely in the dimmer switch located on the back of the instrument cluster. This is also call the potentiometer providing variable resistance in the wiring to the bulbs.

This potentiometer for controlling the dash lights was recently removed from a 300D. It is obvious from the condition that it is a recent replacement. It feels like new and has excellent spring and rod movement and no corrosion.
NOTE: This is the later style with the arrow for the turn signal lights but will fit all years. Now includes free video instructions on how to get the cluster out of the car. Super nice housing with a good clear gouge-free plastic face and no face delamination.
There are a number of things that can go wrong with a W123 instrument cluster.
Good used SOFT RUBBER intact rubber instrument cluster hold-in gasket. This is what holds the cluster tight into the dash. These often get damaged, and the cluster housing won't stay in the dash. Not perfect, but very usable.
