Exhaust / Muffler question: 1983 300SD
I own a 1983 300SD. The standard exhaust system has the muffler in the rear and 2 more or less rectangular shaped mufflers on either side about halfway between the front and rear axle. They look somewhat like "outriggers". What is the purpose of the latter 2? What are the drawbacks if I were to remove them.
Thanks
Dieter

1982 300SD engine mounts question
I see the engine mounts from under the hood. I also noticed what looks like a mini-shock absorber. Is that part of the engine mount? Is it important? How can you tell if it is working? The engine vibrates while in idle but it has no effect on that mini-strut. The rubber mounts are soaked in engine oil but they are not torn. I'm not sure how old they are since I just got the car 1 month or two ago. Mercedes Source has a neat engine mount kit that I can buy but I was wondering if aside form the two rubber engine mounts and the transmission mount, if the mini-strut should be replaced?

1984 300SD ATF level drops when cooled ??
According to the manual, the ATF level should be 5 mm below the low mark on dipstick when at air temperature. I imaging this is because hydraulic fluids expand when heated and contract when cooled. I have the opposite: my level is at the full mark at operating temp, then rises about 2 inches over full mark after it sits overnight. It's as if the torque converter is draining into the pan overnight. The transmission is fine and doesn't leak.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanx.

91 350SDL -- HELP - dropped something into engine
This is a new car to me and I was replacing the glow plugs. To make it easier I removed the Intake Manifold on that engine since some of them did not have the 'proper' nuts on the bad glow plugs.
My mistake was to not cover the intake holes and I think something fell into....ALL THE WAY into the cylinder (past the valve). I have all the nuts and bolts that I was using, so I can't figure out what fell in. After I put it together I heard a metallic bang, bang, bang when I started the engine so I shut it down right a way.
