Engine swap

Just got my 84 300SD running like a new car( thanks Kent) so on to the next project. A mint 76 300d that broke the timing chain after the previous owner replaced it. I have 2 options... a used unknown engine(already out of the car when I bought it) of the same year with 150,000mi? Or a 84 turbo running in the car(wrecked) with 220,000. My question is will the 84 turbo fit in the 115 chassis? Any ideas? Also any way to run the other engine on a stand so I don't transplant junk for more junk . Thanks Jon

'74 240D Belt Issues

I have a 1974 115 chassis 240D. I've been having issues with the alternator belt losing tension and squealing. My problem seems to be the the infernal way the tensioning works, mostly with the rack that the star headed bolt moves along. The rack seems to move up when I try to use the star bolt to tighten the belt, regardless of how tight the rack bolt itself is. I tried to skip the whole silly star bolt thing by simply levering the alternator with a judiciously placed prybar and then tightening the pivot bolt and star bolt. It seems to hold for one or two trips to the grocery store before the dreaded squeals start again. I'm using the conti brand belts and have replaced the star bolt and nut.

220D Not Starting

I have a 220D that sat for several years, but previous owner said it ran last year after compression starting. I have no glow plug light before and after pencil type glow plug upgrade from mercedessource. Motor spins fast enough and acts like it wants to start. I can smell burnt fuel from the tailpipe, but it just won't catch. When the starter knob is pulled out to the glow position I do see the dash lights dim a little. I've found a couple of comments about W115 220d's not having a glow plug relay. What else can I check to verify function of the glow plugs?
