Diesel Engine Specific Aid

87 300TDT Turbo spool up LOUD whine, engine runs but sluggish.

I have a 1987 300TDT with 119,000 original miles bought a year ago from the original owner. Yesterday while accelerating abruptly in traffic I heard a loud wind up sound (like the turbo was out of control), a loud "clink" sound from under the hood, and a puff of grey smoke followed- all within a 2 second range. The rest of the way home (about 8 miles) there was a lack of power and that same wind up sound- only in the range that the turbo would normally kick in: My question is of course... What is it and how to fix it? this is the 603 Diesel 3.0L 6cyl.

cooling system/overheating 1975 240d

HI- just installed new water pump, hoses, new thermostat, new belt, radiator was checked over and is fine, put the new thermostat in pot of boiling water and watched it open, then close after removing so I know it is good. car now overheats immediately (like within 2 or so minutes), so I have not driven it longer than that until I figure this out. The temperature sending unit is new, it isn't the gauge because its the same thing with either of 2 gauge clusters I have.

220d acceleration smoke

hello out there. I'm trying to troubleshoot a smoke problems with my 1973 220d. The main problem is that I don't know what to expect from these cars. After installing the updated glow plug system, one rocker arm/shaft assembly, and removing the injectors to check them out, the car runs great and steady. At idle, the smoke is not bad at all, but if I goose the throttle, black smoke billows. It puffs smoke pretty good when accelerating and under load. From what I have read, this could be the vacuum pump or fi pump diaphragm. I had the back off of the pump and the diaphragm "looked" good.

Diesel fuel injector replacement issues

I am replacing the injectors in my '83 300SD. The rebuilt Bosh injectors came with new crush washers. I also have a new set of crush washers from mercedessource, which came with the fuel return line set. The issue is that the openings in the Bosh supplied crush washers are somewhat smaller and the crushable ridge is not as high as on mercedessource washers. Does this make any difference? Which washers should I use? I need an answer on this quick as I am doing this job right now.

76 300D thumping noise

I have 76 300D that makes a thumping noise that I was certain was the exhaust pipe hitting the chassis/frame. I know this noise and was very surprised to find the exhaust pipe was tight and not the source of the noise. It is related to engine shake at idle. The car starts/runs great but has always had a rough idle. It only makes the noise when the car is stopped in drive. The car will stop making the noise if I shift to neutral. I think there is more to it than the change in rpm caused by putting it in neutral.

82 240D will not start when warm

I have an 82 240D with >217,000 mi. This summer it started not wanting to start once it reached operating temperature. It seems like it is getting air in the lines, but if you let it cool down then it will start again. I replaced the flex fuel line from the tank and the one under the hood on the suction side. I then bought why my diesel will not start, lots of info, nothing specific to hot starting problems. I have since put in a used tubo starter and a new timing chain. The engine turns over faster and has more pep but still refuses to start when warm.

Fuel Filter Replacemnent and other Difficulties- Be Prepared!

When my '82 300DT lost power on the freeway I managed to nurse it to my destination and got out my fuel spare filters. I installed a new prefilter and main filter, bypassed the FM10 water separator, pumped on the hand pump, and then found that the lack of a 17mm end wrench made bleeding the lines at the injectors real difficult as all I had was an adjustable wrench. Too bulky for that job. Then I screwed up by not reading Kent's instructions carefully and ran my battery down before the fuel lines were bled enough to get the engine going.

turbo oil line gasket and air cleaner bracket

I recently replaced my air cleaner bracket which required disconnecting and reconnecting the oil line from the top of the turbo. After reassembling everything, the turbocharger leaked oil. There's a paper gasket where the oil line meets the turbo, and I didn't know I'd have to replace it if I ever disconnect the oil line. I got a new one from a local M-B dealer, partnumber A 603 187 05 80, but it's the wrong size. I tried to use the gasket anyway by making cuts in the gasket, but I doubt it is sealed well or will last very long.
