1981 300D: grinding noise near alternator/water pump...

I have a 1981 300D. A few weeks ago the charge indicator light came on, so I replaced the voltage regulator (thanks for the plastic tie), and the light went off. Two weeks later I was driving with the windows down, and heard an unfamiliar metallic noise coming from the engine. The sound is coming from the front - near the alternator and water pump area. Per your advice I poured water over the belts and...the noise stopped. I sighed in relief, until I noticed that the belt had slipped on the alternator, which had stopped spinning.

240D overheating

My 1977 240D with 260,000 miles, which ran wonderfully up to the point where I decided that I need get the green stuff out, now has overheating issues. I replaced old coolant with the Zerex GO-5 per numerous reference on this forum and other sources. While changing over I also back flush the cooling to confirm that all of the old coolant was completely removed. After purged the system of air through the bleed screw in the top of the thermostat housing and running the heater, I thought I was back on the road as good as ever.

Flex Plate location?

I recently bought an 81 300td that has a 118 transmission. When driving, there is a bad flare between 1st and second and the car "clunks" like I am dragging a can of paint under the shifter. I read (/node/49) the flex plate torque converter page and thought that may be my problem. But I can't figure out where the blasted thing is so I can check it...and if it needs replaced or needs new bolts, Kent, do you have those handy? I did just finish changing the transmission fluids and filter, oil and filter, and the inline fuel filter.

Diesel blow by, high oil consumption, why?

I recently purchased some of your manuals and was checking out my newly purchased 82 300td and noticed it has excessive blow by and was 3 quarts low on oil after roughly 1000mi! I did your plug the breather trick and it goes for 3-4seconds before shutting down. This car starts great on frosty mornings and has lots of power, no smoke and no oil spots on the driveway. What do you think is the best method for freeing up sticky rings? (if that's my problem) I have a friend who fills his crankcase with biodiesel after draining the oil and idles for 10min or so. Do you think this is a bad idea?
