Cams to be used in 1979 300D

I currently own a 1979 300D which has a "worn and scorn" cam. The rocker arms near the front are worn also. This engine has the "00" cam installed. I was given a newer cam and rockers by a friends dad. It is the "05" cam which is the newer "hardened" cam with higher lift. Can this cam and rockers be used in my 300D with engine: 617.912 1207. Too the newer cam has the MB Emblem stamped in it along with the 617 05 between the number 3 and 4 cam lobes. Help someone......Kent?

83 300D turbo which axle do i have

I am replacing the axles on my 300D the CV joint went out after the boot started leaking. When I go to order the new axles it gives me a choice of an Annular Joint or a Homokinetic Joint. The pictures that they supply on the web don't look any different and neither looks like the ones I have. Mine have the cans around the ends Like the boot kit sold here. How do I tell which axle I have Pat

AUTO to MANUAL conversion

HI !!! TO ALL ON THIS FORUM (MAY 30TH, 2007) I just registered 3-4 days ago on this web site. Here is a question that might sound a bit "crazy" ? I just love MANUAL transmissions and vast majority of MBZ sold in USA were AUTO. Has anyone attempted to pair up ANY manual tranny(MBZ or other - 4,5,6 speed) with the 5 cyl 3 litre turbo engine??? If not done personaly... maybe read/heard about it on web. Would very much appreciate ANY info you could share on this. Note: Done this many years ago on on Renault Alliance.

Tricky Rust repair job - rear glass

I have an 82 240D and I take as much care of it as I can. I have that miracle paint and fiber glass rust repair kit so I even try to fix the rust where I can. However, there is a spot of rust coming out from under the rubber weather stripping on the rear windshield. Capillary action has draw watter all along the seal so now there is a huge line of rust along the metal where the rubber seal on the rear wind shield meets the metal. I'd like to try to fix this rust myself but I don't want to start something if I can't finish it.

Jacking Point Problem/Mercedes 300D 1981

Hi--I recently acquired a 1981 300D--upon closer inspection of the underside, I discovered one of the former owners covered up the jacking points with metal (I am guessing to patch for rust). In any event, I am now wondering what options I have for jacking it up seeing as the jacking points are covered. I am working with a floor jack and jack stands--I have worked with trucks before but not a sedan so I am not sure what my options are as how to get around this problem. Any advice on how to go about safely jacking it up would be appreciated, Thanks, Archie

How to Start 300D 1981 (Newbie needs help!)

Just picked up a 1981 300D with 110,000 miles original engine (I hope). At the resellers lot, they had no problem (naturally) starting it many times for me--and I started it also and drove it home--about 35 miles. Had it garaged for about 1 week now and when I went to start it today, I am struggling. The temp. here today is about 50F--cooler by at least 15 degrees than when I purchased it. I am wondering if that is causing me problems. First off though, I am entirely new to starting a diesel, so my initial question has to do with 'how to start' the vehicle properly.

240D speedometer howl

I have a 1981 240D with a speedometer that has recently begun to howl loudly. The speedometer works fine for awhile and then makes a clicking noise and begins to howl. It continues to indicate speed while howling. When I slow down almost to a complete stop, it seems to reset itself and the howling goes away for awhile. I'm thinking maybe the end of the shaft is worn and slightly rounded? Anyone run into this? I think my speedometer is ok since I just had it rebuilt a few months ago. Thanks, Andy
