Diesel Engine Fuel Filters

Major cause of sudden loss of power

When it is time to replace the fuel filters in your older Mercedes diesel you have three (3) filters to be concerned with. Yes that is right, along with your main fuel filter and plastic pre-filter, your Benz has a third filter in the fuel tank. This fuel tank filter does not need to be cleaned or changed every time you replace the other filters, but unless you have done so recently you should remove this filter screen and inspect it.  If you have replaced the other two filters recently and are still experiencing performance problems, then the tank filter should be suspect. Once the tank screen is cleaned or replaced you may not need to look at it for another 5 to 8 years.

Problem & Solution

Common among these chassis:

W115
W116
W123
W124
W126
W201

The screen on the 123, 116, 126, 201 and 124 chassis sedans and coupes is located on the passenger side of the car directly above the right rear axle. The screen in the 115 and diesel station wagons is located in the bottom of the fuel tank. You will need to drain your fuel tank before removing this screen so be sure and run your tank near dry before beginning the job. Removing these screens will take special tools. See our related products below.

While you are working on the screen you may also want to replace the fuel lines back at the tank. If they are old and braided and appear a little damp then this is a must. We carry new filter screens and replacement fuel hose with instructions.
