This is part 2 of a 4 part video series Kent has done on repairing the power tilting sunroofs on the W201 W126 and W124 chassis built from 1986 to 1995. Part 1 covers removal and replacement of the sunroof panel and headliner.
Removing the tilting sunroof panel is a little bit of a mystery to many owners. Since there are no exposed fasteners, at first glance it can appear to be very difficult to remove.
Tilting power sunroof problems can be many. This is particularly true on roof mechanisms that have not received proper lubrication over the years. One of the first things that can fail is the power sunroof cable.
Adjusting the power tilting sunroof is not difficult if you have the right knowledge and a couple alignment pin tools. Adjustment is not usually needed if the sunroof is working properly.
Kent explains why it is important to to remove and open up the motor assembly anytime you are replacing a damaged cable. On the bench he explains the workings of the motor and transmission and shows close up examples of what each of the different components do.

Manual sunroofs can have problems too. Just like their electrically operated counterparts, most often they will fail due to lack of lubrication. The number one failure point is a broken T handle. Number two is failure of the roof to close properly due to damaged felt feet and plastic slides.

This was a good working unit before taken apart. All the internal parts are very usable. This will give you some repair spares for the future.
Left rear pin and slide as shown. This is a common rust part and the threaded pin must be removed to remove the sunroof panel. This pin also rides up on a ramp to close the rear of the sunroof flush with the roof and is adjustable for the rear edge closing.
Super nice part. Appears to be NOS stock. No rust or paint flaking. Comes with good clips and are springs are excellent
