1976 300D Auto Shifting Question

I have a 76' 300D that I have to back off of the gas pedal to make the shift from 2nd to third. The 2nd to third shift will NOT happen unless I cause it with the gas pedal. The 3rd to 4th shift works better and will sometimes shift by itself without me backing off of the pedal. All the shifts happen in the indicated spots on the speedo, more or less, the kickdown into 1st operates just fine and the trans goes into drive and reverse with little to no hesitation. Trans has aprox. 175K on it.
Is there a linkage I can adjust to fix this, or is it a sign of my trans slowly going? To my knowledge this year trans did not have any vacuum hook-ups.

Auxillary water pump valve.

On the 80 300sd that I just purchased it had a shutoff valve between the engine block and the tube coming from the auxillary water pump. I have replaced the thermostat and coolant but I was not getting any increase in temp on the hose leading to the aux. pump. I know this has something to do with the climate control so I wanted to see if there was a blockage or if the valve was frozen shut. I used a thermo gun to see the different temps. When I reconnect3ed the hose without the valve there4 was no coolant flowing out so I assume this is where I mite have had a air pocket.

Alda lock nut "sleeve" ('83 300SD/W126/OM617)

In Kent's manual '61x Automatic Transmission Tuning', on page 17, there is a description of how to adjust the ALDA.

You show a wrench around the locking nut. On W126's at least, the locking nut is not exposed. I cut the plastic cap off, but there is a metal "collar" or cylinder surrounding the screw & nut. This cylinder appears integrated to the top part of the aneroid capsule body itself, with no obvious way to remove it. There is no mention of this in the instruction.

How do W126/OM617 owners get to the locking nut with this collar so close around it? I think this may be the cause of some reports of people breaking theirs (trying to adjust the screw without loosening the lock nut).

Also:
- must the car be off for the adjustment?

1980 300D Won't Start

I replaced the starter about a month ago. The car started fine about a half dozen times and then stopped turning over altogether - not a sound when I turned the key after the glow plug light went off. Replaced the ignition switch yesterday after first having the starter tested to make sure it wasn't a dud (it wasn't). Started the car successfully five or six times without trouble, but am now having the same problem I had before: nothing when I turn the key after the glow plug light turns off. Any idea what's going on? I'm at a loss.
