Dead Tranny? What to Check? (1981 300D)
I’m wondering if my automatic transmission in my ’81 300D W123 is completely dead or just needs some good diagnostics. I’m asking for help on what to check to conclude what needs to be replaced.

Having a clunking sound coming from rear axel when car shifts down into low gear and shift into 4th. (automatic)
Is it the differential?
Both directional lights and Tach not functioning. Checked and replaced fuse but still no action. Everything else on the same relay is working fine.
Section 1 Turbo Removal shows compressor bolt removal when hot except for two at 11 and 6 o'clock. With respect to the difficult to access 6 bolt, why wasn't it loosened before the compressor bolts?
Does the turbo drain pipe interfere with removal?
I would prefer to break the difficult turbo bolts before the compressor bolts.
I am embarassed to ask this, but what size license plate bolts does the 123 chassis use to secure the rear license plate? The car came with 2, I lost one by trying to size it up in the store, now I have one plate on the car (in a 2 plate state) and only one bolt holding that one on at that.
I was trying to replace my hatch shocks and stripped what i thought was a torx head.
Any ideas on how to remove the stripped bolt? Do i have to replace it with the same style bolt or is something from the hardware store ok?
Thanks for any advice!
Used Mercedessource repair manuals and vacuum pump to find vacuum loss on green line going into firewall. Comment in manual suggests this is vacuum line to Climate Control. Not sure this car ('81 240D) has climate control.
Pulled instrument cluster and could see vac line going into upper center of dash. What does it connect to and where would I find it? I hate to start pulling the dash only to find it was a simple repair if I had just known where to look...
Thanks!
