These washers are installed right under the four nuts that hold the valve cover securely to the cylinder head. They help to prevent the over tightening of the valve cover as well as prevent the nut from loosening up. They also keep the nut from gouging the metal out of the valve cover.
Why is this so important? It is primarily due to the age of these cars now and the fact that lurking problems can be hidden from visual inspection. There is not ONE diesel that Kent has looked at in the last five years that does not need this service! Even ones with under 150,000 original miles.
Even many old-time Mercedes diesel "experts" are surprised about this part. It is so unknown that it never gets replaced in the oil filter housing, meaning that almost all of them are no longer working today. Watch the video below, and Kent will explain its location and function.
This unique tank not only functions as an emergency fuel tank, but it can also serve to help troubleshoot diesel engine performance problems as well as complete a clean and efficient diesel purge.

I have received so many emails on this topic that I had to sit down and write a very detailed manual over 130 pages in length! Let's face it! Diesel automatic transmissions can be troublesome, particularly those models that use vacuum to control shifts.

If your engine is just running hot, it may be due to a plugged radiator or possibly a stuck thermostat. If your engine is just losing coolant it could be a leak in the water pump, radiator or hoses.

This gasket should be replaced when you remove the oil cooler housing to replace the main block gasket. These get old and hard and will leak due to age. Easy to do it on the bench. Not so easy to do it on the car.
Here is another diesel item I strongly believe should be replaced as a preventative measure. Water pumps do not last forever and when they go, it is usually when you are on a trip - right? I feel they should be changed every 100,000 miles.

If you have a W116 or W126 300SD or a turbo 1981 to 1985 5 cylinder W123 Diesel you must pay attention to your oil cooler hoses. If one of these hoses fail you will destroy the engine unless you are in the habit of looking at your oil pressure gauge every 5 minutes while driving.
The Monark nozzles #120 are all gone, never to be remade. We do have a few hundred #128 nozzles still available. Kent and Kaia got together and started questioning why they would not work in the OM616 and OM617 engines. So in May of 2024 Kent decided to put them to the test.
With this kit you will be able to hook up a pressure gauge to your intake manifold and route it inside your car for the purpose of monitoring your turbo charger boost pressure while driving.
Diesel engines make noise. Some ticking and rattling is normal and not something you should be concerned about. Certain loud knocking or rattling noises could be a sign that something bad is happening to the engine, especially if the noise comes on suddenly.

I don't think there is any owner out there who has owned a 1978 to 1993 diesel automatic for any length of time and who has not had some sort of shift problem with the transmission. Maybe it was just a little jerk or a slipping shift. Maybe the rear end clunked hard when you came to a stop.
